DOS PALOS Y, Calif. — A new countywide medical dispatch option is now available to residents of rural Merced County, including the Dos Palos Y area. On October 28, 2026, American Medical Response (AMR) and the Merced County Emergency Medical Services Agency launched a 911 Nurse Navigation program intended to connect eligible callers with professional guidance when an ambulance trip may not be the best option.
How the service works
People still call 911 for a medical emergency. Dispatchers first assess the situation. For certain non-life-threatening complaints, callers may be offered a connection with a licensed nurse. The nurse asks more questions using physician-approved guidelines and may help identify a suitable urgent-care clinic, telehealth appointment, other available medical provider or appropriate home-care instructions.
AMR says the program is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. An ambulance remains available if the nurse determines that emergency medical care is necessary or the caller requests a response.
Why rural residents could benefit
Some Westside Merced County households face long drives to health services or transportation barriers. The new service may help residents navigate local options instead of automatically traveling to a distant emergency department for a lower-acuity medical concern. Whether a particular provider or ride is available will depend on the circumstances.
Important safety distinction
Do not delay calling 911 for chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, stroke symptoms, unconsciousness, uncontrolled bleeding or another potentially life-threatening condition. The nurse program is not a substitute for emergency dispatch and does not require residents to diagnose themselves before calling.
There is no separate number to enroll in Nurse Navigation: it operates through the existing emergency-call process for eligible cases.
