DOS PALOS Y, Calif. — October 31, 2026. An important broadband expansion project is moving forward in the Dos Palos area after state regulators approved up to $14.8 million in funding to bring fiber-optic internet service to households that have been left without adequate connectivity.
The California Public Utilities Commission announced the funding in August as part of its California Advanced Services Fund infrastructure grant program. The Merced Dos Palos Project, proposed by Frontier California, targets 289 unserved locations in parts of Merced and Fresno counties.
Who may benefit?
For residents of Dos Palos Y and nearby unincorporated communities, reliable broadband can affect remote learning, job applications, telehealth and communications during emergencies. The approved network is designed to reach eligible locations, but not every address in the region will necessarily be covered. Project maps and an address check are needed to determine whether a particular home is included.
The project described in the state decision involves roughly 80 miles of fiber, with a mix of aerial and underground construction. State grant funds account for most of the estimated project cost. Once deployed, the system is designed to support substantially higher speeds than traditional copper-based service. Advertised future technical capacity does not establish what packages, prices or speeds residents will actually receive.
What happens next?
The award is a grant approval, not a completion notice. Roadside work, utility pole preparation, permits, service installation and commercial activation are separate phases. The state’s announcement does not certify that a specific household is already connected.
CPUC said income-eligible households are expected to have access to affordability options, including the California LifeLine Home Broadband Pilot, after completion. Residents should seek current pricing and eligibility directly from the provider rather than assume service will be free.
How to follow the project
Residents can review the CPUC approved-projects register and ask Frontier whether their address lies within the service footprint. The agency lists this award under Resolution T-17926, approved August 13, 2026.
